GED Furey, fresh from his magnificent success in the Lombard Top Club Trophy, fired a first round level-par 71 at Herons Reach to lie four shots off the lead in the Lancashire Open.
Also on level par was Simon Townend from Wilpshire while Jeff Mathews, from Blackburn Driving Range, lay one shot further back.
Clitheroe's John Twissell was two over, Blackburn amateur Tony Jackson four over, Damian Taylor from Accrington and District six over and Clitheroe's Ian Taylor eight over.
Adam Hart from Ingol shot 67 to lead the field.
Furey expressed confidence going into today's second and final round.
"I'm still not over the Lombard but I'm in the hunt," he said.
