A CANCER victim died today only days after being granted a final wish...a ride in a classic British sports car.
Harry Clegg, 68, of Baxenden, who had lung cancer, rode in a 1948 MG TD roadster after his wife June and sister-in-law Beryl Crossley "fixed-it" for him to take to the road.
Beryl contacted Red Rose Classic Sports Cars of Haslingden and the firm agreed to help out.
Mr Clegg, of Manchester Road, was taken on a 20-minute spin around Haslingden and Oswaldtwistle.
Beryl said: "He had a superb time. It tired him out but he was so elated it was unbelievable.
"I would like to thank Red Rose for being so kind and helping us make Harry's last wish come true."
Trevor Crook, a partner in the classic car restoration business, said: "He was absolutely thrilled to bits with it.
"It was worth doing just to see his reaction. "We got on really well. I got his life story as we were driving around."
In fact Beryl, of Hill View, Rawtenstall, managed two out of three after asking June what three things her husband most wanted to do.
"He was a great Max Bygraves fan," said Beryl.
"He idolised him and kept us all entertained by singing his songs.
"He wanted to meet him so I rang his agent. Max Bygraves was leaving the country for a time but he did send a signed photograph which he had personalised for Harry."
Unfortunately Beryl could not grant Harry's third wish to meet his former commanding officer, Harry Callahand, from when he served with the 3rd Paras.
Inquiries to the Royal British Legion revealed Mr Callahand, of Ramsbottom, died four years ago.
Mr Clegg had been diagnosed with cancer five months ago although doctors said he had been suffering from the disease for several years.
