w/e October 5, 1946. MEN'S HOCKEY Although Preston defeated Bury 5-0 it perhaps may be considered that a five-goal margin was not quite representative of the play. For Bury, Turnbull and Roberts were very sound at the back and Skipp and Petrie were prominent in attack but there was no doubt as to Preston's superiority.
LADIES HOCKEY Bury entertained Didsbury for their opening match of the season and, from the opening bully, Bury monopolised play to make a double figure score - 10-0.
SWIMMING For its first annual gala since 1938 the Bury and Elton Amateur Swimming Club had a full programme of 20 events in the Corporation Baths. Most of the club's activities were in abeyance during he war years, owing to the calling up of many members.
The three main events were the gents', ladies' and junior boys' championships. T C Hill retained his title in the 250 yards gents' championship for the Public Subscription Cup with a time of 3 minutes 45.8 seconds. The ladies 100 yards championship for the Captain Ainsworth Cup was won by Miss J Spencer in one minute 37 seconds. There was a hard struggle for the junior boys' 100 yard championship, W. Heap and B Crowley swimming neck to neck. Heap gradually pulled out to win 1 min 26.2.
SOCCER For the fourth game in succession and for the fifth time this season Bury shared the points that should have been two. At Leicester defective finishing prevented the decisive goal or goals being scored. Had their five drawn games been won, which they might easily have been, then the Shakers would have been among the leaders in the Second Division.
GOLF An excellent score of 80-9-71 gained J F Smith leading place in the Crompton prizes competition in Walmersley. Another player to beat the par for the course was J C Ramsden with 88-15-73. P Nabb, with a four-down return, won the Lowes Park bogey competition.
