A HORSE was killed when a fire, thought to have been started by arsonists, swept through a stable in Tyldesley.
The small stable - home to a 27-year-old mare - was found ablaze at Cooling Lane shortly after 9.30pm.
Ten firefighters fought the fire, but they were unable to save the horse.
People nearby battled to save the mare, named Dancer, but were forced back by the heat. The stable was well ablaze when the two fire crews arrived.
The firemen's and neighbours' efforts were praised by the horse's devastated owner, Mrs Chris Long, of Astley.
She said: "They were wonderful and I want to thank them for their efforts.
"I would also like to thank all the neighbours who live close to the stables. During Dancer's time there, they have been fantastic.
"She has lived there for 20 years and during that time, children living close by have been brought to see her, and she has been well looked after by all the neighbours.
"The stable was situated in a fairly busy spot which meant she was regularly visited by people in the area. It was a nice little haven.
"I have had Dancer for 20 years and this is a very sad way for her to end her life.
"It is horrific that it has had to end like this.
"I had left the stable at about 4.40pm and by 11pm the whole thing had been burnt to the ground.
"I had even made sure I had locked the door - something I did not always do. She was a part of my life, and what happened last night was dreadful."
Detectives are investigating the blaze.
Witnesses are asked to contact Leigh CID on 0161 872 5050.
