SPECIALS in Preston have been armed with batons in the battle against crime.
Volunteer cops on regular duty out on the streets can now defend themselves with American style side-handled batons as well as being issued with protective clothing.
Sergeant Bob Jackson, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: "The force sees the issue of batons to special constables as being another way to enhance their safety and efficiency."
He was quick to assure people that the truncheons will be used properly: "Batons will only be used after Specials have been given rigourous safety training by specialist in-house self defence instructors.
"Specials have a great deal of training in all aspects of police work. They are not 'hobby bobbies'," he added.
The constabulary are seeking grants from a special Home Office fund for more protective equipment - as well as bidding for cash to help with administration, management and training. Lancashire's Assistant Chief Constable, David Vine, said: "Special Constables play an important role in helping us provide visible policing in the county.
"It's only right and proper they have the right sort of equipment for the job and that is why we are seeking this grant."
