OFFICIALS of a long-established band are celebrating their latest piece of 'brass' - a £25,936 grant from the National Lottery!
Now the popular Parr Band, which has been a fixture of the local musical scene for more than 65 years, is hoping to swell its ranks by establishing a new junior section.
And the lottery lolly will come in especially handy for purchasing new instruments for the brass band, which practices at The Engine pub in Newton Road.
Band librarian and trombone player Robert Birkett told the Star: "We have contacted local schools and are hopeful of establishing a junior section. But there will be no age restrictions, anyone, of any age and ability, is welcome if they want to learn a brass instrument and become a member of the band.
"The lottery grant is really good news and we're pleased that the band was seen as a worthy cause for this generous award."
