HOLIDAY company Airtours is expanding overseas by setting up a subsidiary operation in California, the group announced today.

Airtours said Sunquest Holidays would be based in California and would begin operating in April.

The Helmshore-based group said Sunquest would provide holidays from various departure points in California to destinations in Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Airtours said many of those destinations were already served by the group's UK and Canadian tour operating businesses, but believed the potential market in the west of the US was enormous.

"The number of potential customers in California is roughly equal to that of the UK market," the company said.

Airtours recently reported that summer 1996 bookings were 16 per cent below the previous year, although some of that was due to a reduction in capacity.
