AN 80-YEAR-old woman has accused British Gas of hounding her for cash she has already paid as she recovers from a heart attack.

Miss Mary Bromley, of Darwen, said the gas board had repeatedly made mistakes with her account throughout year.

First they sent three bills on the same day, asking for different amounts covering the same period.

When a correct bill was sent to her in June for £161.33, Miss Bromley claims she paid up.

But she has still been bombarded with demands, the latest in a phone call on a Sunday afternoon. She said the constant demands have left her in stressed and sick with worry.

She said: "I've had cut-off warnings and final demands, but the cheque I sent cleared my account on June 19.

"I've written countless letters and made numerous phone calls, but they won't leave me alone. I've never owed a penny in my life and if I was a weaker person this could have driven me to suicide."

A spokesman for British Gas said: "We have found the payment she made, which had been credited to the wrong customer account.

"We apologise to the lady for this problem and will write to her expressing our apologies."
