CONTINUING their impressive run of late, Rossendale battled their way to a victory over the Old Boys at Dark Lane which hauled them off the bottom of NWCL Division One.
Ian Curwen and Scott McQuarry grabbed the goals before a Holker retort left United defending heroically for the final 20 minutes of the game.
"It was a big game for us and we got the result that was required," said manager Micky Graham. Near the end of an uninspiring first half, Curwen made his telling contribution with a fierce strike from the edge of the box that dropped into the top corner. McQuarry made it 2-0 in the 65th minute when the ball was flicked into the six yard box and the centre forward helped it on into the net.
Within a minute, however, Holker struck back with a shot that took a deflection before increasing the pressure for the remainder of the match.
The Blues held on with the entire defence and new signing Paul Thompson acquitting themselves well.
