A MEMBER of a Bury gun club has been expelled after police found weapons and ammunition at the school where he works.
Bury Shooting Sports Club say Paul Fell has brought the organisation "into disrepute" following the incident. A formal letter of expulsion has been sent to Mr Fell by club secretary Mr Michael Darlington.
The action comes in the wake of a police swoop on a school in Rochdale where Mr Fell had been working as a caretaker. Bullet-making equipment was discovered together with imitation pistols and hand grenades.
A subsequent search by officers of Mr Fell's mother's home uncovered a number of weapons from a secure cupboard.
In the letter of expulsion, Mr Darlington stated: "I can confirm that you have been expelled from the club by the committee for bringing the club, and shooting sports, into disrepute."
The secretary told the Bury Times: "This was completely out of character for Paul.
"As far as I was aware, he was transferring home when this happened.
"But he has been rather silly."
Mr Darlington denied reports that Mr Fell was the club safety officer although he acknowledged he had been a committee member.
Bury Shooting Sports Club is based at Peel Mills.
