POLICE in Lancashire are preparing to play a bigger role in the vetting of gun clubs, following new proposals to outlaw high-powered handguns.
Force bosses have welcomed the Home Secretary's move in the wake of the Dunblane tragedy, but are examining the implications for officers, which seem likely to include collection and storage of banned firearms. Assistant Chief Constable David Smith said: "His decision to remove higher powered handguns from circulation will be a significant measure towards ensuring greater public safety.
"We need to look very closely at the proposals. Certainly, it would appear we are going to play a bigger role in the vetting and policing of gun clubs and in the vetting and issuing of licences."
