A NEW campaign to rebuild the lantern tower of Blackburn Cathedral was revealed to Hyndburn councillors at the meeting of the policy and resources committee.
The Very Rev David Frayne explained the reasons why the council should help fund the necessary renovation work, which is estimated to cost £750,000.
He stressed the cathedral was unique in the county and was a place for everybody in East Lancashire, not just for the people of Blackburn.
The aim is to repair the tower and install a multi-coloured, multi-cultural stained glass window which will be seen on the Blackburn skyline.
The Very Rev Frayne said: "The Cathedral tower was badly built in the 1950s/1960s and unless work is undertaken it will fall down.
"The boroughs of East Lancashire have an affinity with each other and I would like to think that this closeness will enable us to address the issue of funding the lantern tower work."
The appeal is to be officially launched next year.
