BLACKBURN Rovers are among the clubs aware that Brazilian superstar Bebeto is on the market and hankering after a return to football in Europe, writes PETER WHITE.
But it looks a non-starter as far as Ewood is concerned.
For any thoughts that Rovers boss Ray Harford might have had of stepping up an interest in the striker will no doubt have been dispersed by the sort of financial package it would take to tempt him to England.
I understand that something like a staggering £8 million is reckoned to be the overall cost of bringing Bebeto back to Europe!
And, for a 32-year-old whose best days were probably spent in Spain, that is a totally unrealistic outlay. Bebeto, who was an integral part of the Brazil side which won the World Cup in America in 1994 - when his "baby" celebrations were the talk of the tournament - had a very successful reign in Spain with Deportivo La Coruna.
He helped them challenge the big boys from Barcelona and Real Madrid in the League, win the Copa Del Rey and reach the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners Cup before going down to eventual winners Paris St Germain.
Last season, however, proved a disappointing one in the Spanish First Division for La Coruna, who finished in mid-table.
And Bebeto returned to Brazil to join Flamengo.
Rovers have been handed a home draw in the FA Youth Cup first round. They will meet Blackpool at Ewood, with the date yet to be decided.
