ADRIAN Heath is demanding consistency from his players, as the Burnley boss goes searching for a top six place in Division Two.
Having settled new contracts with three more of his first team squad this week - including highly-rated goalkeeper Marlon Beresford - Heath believes he is doing his bit to bring stability and continuity to Turf Moor.
Now he wants the team to do exactly the same thing on the field.
"I think everybody in this division knows how well we can play, as do our own supporters," said the manager.
"We are capable of beating the best in the division.
"Unfortunately, we are also capable of losing to the worst team in the division, as we showed last Saturday.
"We have to try to achieve greater consistency and, if we do that, then there is no reason why we cannot claim a place in the top six." The happy ending to the Beresford saga, and new contracts for both Andy Cooke and Paul Smith, strengthens Heath's conviction that he is not only rebuilding for the present at Turf Moor but also for the long-term future.
"I always felt that we would agree terms with Marlon, because the over-riding factor was that he wanted to play for Burnley," he said.
"That was always the most important thing.
"But you also know that when players are on a week-to-week contract, you can lose them at any time.
"So I am pleased it has been sorted out, it has dragged on.
"When you look at other players like Gerry Harrison and Paul Weller, as well as those we have brought in, I now have eight or nine signed up for some time.
"It has to be good for the club and it's something you have to do in the wake of Bosman.
"If you don't sign players up, they can leave at the drop of a hat."
The past few months have been very much a transitional period at Turf Moor but, even though his search for men to strengthen the squad continues unabated, Heath will now be much happier with his resources.
He remains aware, however, that injuries can soon make a difference.
Burnley have been given a tough task in the first round of the FA Youth Cup, being drawn away to Premiership giants Newcastle United.
