ROADSIDE advertising boards will warn people in Pendle if their area is under threat of becoming a crime hot-spot.
The latest weapon in the campaign to cut down crime was unveiled as Pendle suffered a surge in housebreaking and theft.
Colne, Barrowford and Nelson have all been hit.
During the last few days around £30,000 worth of property ranging from jewellery to small change has been spirited away. Police are linking some, but not all of the thefts.
They urge people to be vigilant, looking out not only for their own but their neighbours' homes too.
The new advertising boards are similar to those seen by the roadside at the scenes of accidents where the Police are appealing for witnesses.
It is hoped the short, sharp message will encourage people living in the area to be watchful as well as emphasising the message of home security.
One of largest thefts took place in Bankfold, Barrowford, early on Tuesday afternoon. It was one of three in Higherford which all happened within a short time of each other.
The thieves forced a ground floor window and searched all the rooms until they came to a bedroom and found diamond and sapphire rings. In all, the jewellery was worth £10,500.
As well as jewellery, other popular items on burglars' shopping lists have been video and television sets and cameras.
They even took commemorative coins and a pension book from a 77-year-old woman in Carleton Street, Nelson.
Police sergeant Phil Vernon said: "We always try to encourage people to make as good a job of securing their homes as they can.
"Don't leave keys in the locks or have them hanging up where people can reach in and get them.
"Use the best locks you can and use the advice of our crime prevention officers.
"Get an alarm fitted if you can afford it, but most of be a good neighbour."
