ANGRY residents believe it is only 'a matter of time' before someone is killed at an accident blackspot, which was the scene of an horrific smash this week.

Residents believe it was 'sheer luck' that no-one was maimed or killed when a Jaguar went through a garden wall and into a porch at a semi-detached property in Newbank Road, Blackburn.

The crash prompted residents to renew pleas for sign-posts to be erected at the junction of St Silas Road and Newbank Road, which has been the scene of scores of accidents over the last five years. The owner of the damaged property, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "To my knowledge, the wall has been knocked down on this property eight times in the last six years.

"This time the car hit the concrete gate posts with such force that one was knocked down and the other was hurled through the porch, followed by the car.

"It was lucky I was not in at the time. If anyone had been around, they could have been killed."

Another resident, mother-of-three Anne Holden, of Newbank Road, said: "This junction is an accident blackspot. Drivers just don't realise they haven't got priority coming along Newbank Road. "They just don't see the road markings. We need signposts to make the junction safer."

Anne, an accounts assistant at a Jaguar dealership, added: "Residents have been complaining for years to have sign-posts erected. Every time there is an accident, the road markings are just repainted.

"We have a lot of children live in this area. It is about time somebody did something before someone is killed ."

Staff from Blackburn Council's development services department are meeting with the district surveyor and police this week to discuss what measure can be taken to make the junction safer.
