ONE in five non-pensioner homes in the St Helens North constituency have nobody in work, according MP John Evans.
A new Labour Party analysis of the Government's Labour Force Survey figures reveals that accross the United Kingdom, 3.2 million households have no adult in employment. This represents18 per cent, or nearly a fifth, of the national workforce.
Commenting on the figures, John Evans said: "This week, the Government announced yet another fall in the jobless total, but this is bogus. The Tories fail to recognise that millions of adults are competeley divorced from the labour market. Tory policies will not put these people back to work.
"Here in the North West, 409,000 homes with people of working age are without work, which represents 21 per cent of the population. This is a tragic waste of both our communities and the individuals concerned.
"Labour's early pledge of windfall tax on the privatised utilities will put 250,000 people back to work. We will also tackle the plight of the long-term unemployed who the Tories have deserted."
