OLD people are being warned to be on their guard against bogus workmen who may try to bully them into paying for unnecessary jobs on their homes.

Age Concern says several Burnley pensioners have been tricked by con-men who turned up on their doorsteps and claimed repairs were needed.

Some victims were persuaded to pay in advance by workmen who claimed to be short of cash.

Paul Wills, boss of Age Concern's Burnley office, said: "Do not be bullied. It is completely up to you if work is carried out.

"Never let workmen approach you saying work needs doing. Reputable contractors do not do this. Never pay for work in advance, and never take the excuse that the workman needs the money straight away.

"If a workman says he has undertaken work you have not asked for then do not pay.

"There is an organisation in Burnley called Staying Put, which can put people in touch with reputable workmen. If you are unsure at all contact them and they can help to identify problems, outline the best remedies and keep an eye on the job."

Mr Wills said people should always get two quotes for a job and never take the word of one workman about what needs doing. Always get a second opinion.
