CAR thefts in Prestwich have been halved in one month thanks to new police initiatives. The huge reduction was reported by Chief Inspector David Morris, head of the Whitefield sub-division.

He was speaking at the Bury South Police and Community Consultative Group on Monday. He said number of cars stolen had reduced by 50 per cent in the last month.

Since the end of September traffic units and plain-clothed police officers have been patrolling Prestwich to crack down on car crime.

Ch Insp Morris said: "Obviously people have noticed our presence and the theft cars has as a result been reduced.

"We are determined to stop car crime."

The initiative runs until today and if the reduction continues it will be moved to elsewhere in the borough.

Coun Ivan Lewis welcomed the scheme saying that he had two cars stolen in Prestwich in the last ten weeks.
