JAM beating busways could be the answer to nightmare travel between Leigh and neighbouring towns.

In a bid to beat road chaos with efficient, on-time public transport, a Busway Transit Scheme is on line for introduction between Leigh and Bolton.

The pioneer project is aimed at luring commuters from their cars onto buses - which would run in special bus lanes with traffic signal and timetable priority.

High specification buses, such as those with easy access for the disabled, would be used on the St Helens Road busway route between Leigh and Bolton. But less user-friendly vehicles would be banished to the mainstream traffic struggle.

GMPTA members are pressing for the scheme and would like to develop other busways.

A Guided Bus scheme, with buses running between fixed kerbs on a roadway separate from the main highway, is under discussion. And if it goes ahead a route between Leigh and Wigan could be a forerunner.
