SOLICITORS were today holding a prison meeting with former Blackburn Rovers star Simon Garner in a bid to overturn the worst result of his life.

But there does not appear to be any immediate prospect of Ewood Park's record goal scorer being released.

Representatives from Blackburn firm Farleys were due to travel to Kirkham Open Prison to discuss Garner's next move after he was sentenced to nine months in jail during legal proceedings arising from his marriage break-up.

But grounds for an appeal do not appear to be clear cut and, even if an appeal is successful, it could be some time before he is freed.

Garner was taken to Preston Prison on Wednesday after being found in contempt of court by a judge at Blackburn County Court.

He was categorised as a low risk prisoner and transferred to Kirkham, but not before he spent a night inside the same walls as some of the county's most violent criminals.

Garner, 36, is understood to have been sentenced after breaking a court order by disposing of a "substantial amount" of cash held as matrimonial assets following his divorce from wife Mandy last year.

Mandy, who lives in the Feniscowles area of Blackburn, has declined to comment on the case.

Garner, who scored 192 goals during his time at Blackburn, was living in Maidenhead and playing for non-League side Woking but he had recently been on loan at Surrey club Walton and Hersham.
