Accrington Stanley 4 Witton Albion 1
BRENT Peters quit as director of football at Accrington Stanley prior to Stanley's 4-1 win over Witton Albion.
Peters said that he felt frustrated in his position at the Crown Ground because he wanted to return to management.
"When I was approached by Eric Whalley I made a gentleman's agreement that I would not go to another club for at least a year.
"But things have changed here in that time and I feel I am too young to stay 'upstairs' right now.
"I feel as though I haven't yet fulfilled my potential at team level."
Peters said he had been approached by one or two clubs but didn't want to break his agreement with Whalley.
But he admitted he had applied for the Ashton United vacancy.
"I am only 38 and I have a lot to offer. "As a manager I have been successful wherever I have been," said Peters who has had spells with Glossop and Rossendale United.
"I still have a high regard for Eric Whalley and Accrington Stanley."
Peters' departure didn't upset Stanley's form as they blasted troubled Witton Albion away at a snow-covered Crown Ground.
Stanley took the lead after just three minutes when Bret Ormerod flicked on a Paul Robertson through ball and wrong-footed the Albion keeper.
Peter Smith doubled the reds lead when he reacted first to a lose ball in the box.
And it was 3-0 before the break.
A cross to the near post beat everyone but Mark Rostron arrived at teh far post to finish it off.
When Smith added the fourth with a carbon copy of his opener in the 55th minute a goal avalanche threatened.
But in the final 10 minutes Witton, who have financial problems, made Stanley's debut-making keeper Steve Perryman work.
He was finally beaten in the final minute but it was too late for the visitors.
