IN reply to G Schofield (Letters, November 16) who was critical of my letter (November 9), the only reason the Liberal Party supported the Labour Government in 1924 was because of a disagreement with the Conservative party feud and by Stanley Baldwin over the introduction of tariffs on foreign imports.

In August, 1931, Macdonald, Snowden and Thomas deserted Labour and joined the Conservatives and Liberals in a National Government which introduced the means test, cut the pay of most State employees, and even cut unemployment benefits. Snowden was also an incompetent chancellor of the exchequer, clinging to policy of deflations which hindered Britain's industrial recovery.

He also supported the return to the Gold Standard in 1925 at the pre-1914 parity-of-exchange, which had a disastrous effect on Britain export trade especially coal.
