MAY I bring to your readers' attention the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's new fact sheet - 'The treatment of advanced breast cancer.'

We have seen some revolutionary advances in our understanding and treatment of breast cancer during the last 10 years, and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund has been at the forefront of this work.

We have what is probably the most extensive and co-ordinated research programme into this cancer in Europe - costing £5 million a year to run.

The good news is that breast cancer deaths in the UK have fallen 10 per cent since 1989. Unfortunately, there are still women who have advanced breast cancer by the time it is diagnosed.

One of our research priorities is finding treatments we can tailor more specifically to the cancer, so that it is mainly the cancer which is affected and not the patient's healthy cells., especially as some treatments can be quite debilitating

If you would like a copy of our fact sheet please send an sae to: "Advanced breast cancer," PR Dept, Imperial Cancer Research Fund, PO Box 123, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PX. All our literature is free but donations are most welcome.

CHRISTINE SUGGARS, Information Officer, Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
