A SCHOOL fell silent at 11 o'clock on Thursday in tribute to a former pupil who went on to be a governor at the school (writes MALCOLM RYDING).

Peter Weaver, who was a representative for the CofE Deane Deanery on the Hesketh Fletcher High School governing body, died in Bolton Royal on Saturday after a long illness. He was 30 and leaves a wife, Louise, and son Conor.

A Leigh RL fan, Peter went on a cash-raising cycle ride for the Atherton school's building fund around ten cathedral cities together Simon McCalla, son of Tyldesley vicar Ian McCalla.

Headmaster Don Vickers paid tribute to Peter's commitment to the school as a pupil and governor.

"And at 11 o'clock when the funeral started, the school bell rang and all pupils and staff stood in silence for one minute as a mark of respect for Peter," said Mr Vickers.

Former deputy head Brian Wilson, who is now a governor, together with teacher-governors and senior prefects were at the funeral at Peter's local parish church in Daisy Hill.
