POLICE are appealing for help in catching masked raiders after a cash snatch at a cash and carry.

Two Securicor guards and staff at Booker Cash and Carry, on the Deepdale Retail Park, were left shocked after armed men struck in the car-park. In a terrifying moment one of the gang - who are thought to have escaped with thousands of pounds - pointed a gun at a guard's head and demanded money.

He stepped back and pulled the trigger only to fire a blank in the incident just after 4pm last Wednesday (November 20). Detective Constable Andy Hobson of Fulwood CID said: "Investigations are underway and we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward."

Three or four men were involved in the haul and made their escape at high speed up Blackpool Road in a stolen blue Vauxhall Astra van, later found abandoned on Maitland Street, Preston.

The gun was also later recovered and found to be a blank-firing pistol. Rebecca Williams, spokeswoman for Securicor, said: "The safety and well being of our staff is of paramount importance. Fortunately, no-one was injured in this incident.

"We hope someone will come forward with information leading to the arrest of those responsible."

Head of security for Booker Alex Berry said: "The raid was on the security van and not on the depot.

"In light of any incident like this we obviously review our methods."

Anyone with information should contact Detective Sergeant Alistair Graham on 209541
