A TIPPING company refused permission to carry on dumping at a Rossendale quarry will have its case heard by a Government inspector.

A public inquiry into tipping at Horncliffe Quarry, Rawtenstall, will be held early next year.

Parkpit Landfill Ltd has appealed against a county council decision to halt work at the Bury Road site.

Plans to extend the life of the tip sparked off a residents' campaign and more than 100 people wrote letters of objection to the county council.

They said the tip causes noise, smells, litter and destruction of drains.

Rossendale Borough Council backed the protests but county hall recommended approval of the application. They advised the council to impose a series of strict conditions including restrictions on working hours.

The inquiry will be at the Astoria Ballroom in Rawtenstall on Tuesday, January 7.
