LEIGH RU is setting the pace in the growing game on women's rugby.

Now they are looking for new recruits to strengthen an already successful side.

Rugby Union has always been associated with men - until now.

The popularity of the sport has been growing among women over the last few years and the number of women's team in the North West has been steadily increasing.

Reluctant to be left behind, Leigh are looking to improve their women's team, who currently top North West Division Four after finishing third last year.

Another display of the team's ability is the achievement of certain players - like Jen Aspinall and Dianne Bradford, who regularly play for the North West team.

The regional side recently cruised to a 59-0 win over the East Midlands, but were beaten 15-12 in York by London East.

Jen, 23, who plays second row for the North West, spoke about playing at such a high standard.

She said: "I feel honoured. Most other players in the North West side are from a national standard and I am proud to be the first representative of Leigh."

Teams like Leigh increase the popularity of the sport and encourage players with promising futures in the game to develop along with this new branch of the sport.

The club is looking for sponsors to assist forerunners like Jen and encourage others to follow in her footsteps.

The team are eager to stress the game has something to offer for all ages, standards and levels of fitness.

If anyone is interested in finding out more they should attend training at the club on Hand Lane.
