YOUNGSTERS from Atherton SC hit the medal trail at the Central Lancashire Warburton Age Group Gala in Salford.

Hannah Foster took gold in the 12-Year 100 butterfly in a PB.

Andrew Grimes also swam a PB for silver in the 15-Year 200 individual medley. Simon Clare finished just behind for bronze.

And Rhiann Jackson took bronze in the 11-Year 50 breaststroke.

Fourth places went to Amy Jones in the 11-Year 100 freestyle (PB); Hannah Foster in the 12-Year 50 backstroke and Gerald Prescott in the 15-Year 200 individual medley (PB).

Cheryl Hall and Ryan Grundy both swam PBs to finish fifth in the 11-Year 100 freestyle and 12-Year 100 butterfly respectively.

Ryan also finished fifth in the 50 backstroke.

Fine swims also came from Rebecca Grime, Rhiann Jackson and Stephen Winstanley in the 11-Year 100 freestyle, and Rebecca, Stephen, Amy Jones and Cheryl Hall in the 11-Year 50 breaststroke.

Club results in the 1996 Central Lancashire League were: Junior Swimming League Division One sixth place; winners 12-Year mixed; runners-up 12-Year boys, 12-Year girls and 16-Year boys.

In the Intermediate League Atherton won Division Two and were promoted.

Senior League individual results: Michael Cowburn won the junior gents backstroke and Simon Clare won the junior gents freestyle.

Runners-up were Andrew Grime in the junior gents butterfly and Paul Cowburn in the gents backstroke.

Team results: runners-up junior gents freestyle, junior gents medley and gents intermediate medley (joint).

Atherton scored a double in the B Final of the Bolton & District Inter-Club mini gala at Salford.

It was the second successive year the winning trophy was destined to adorn the club's trophy cabinet.

Team manager Sue Foster, who has organised the teams for the past three years, has an incredible record in the event - a second and two firsts.

Nine swimmers from Atherton represented Central Lancashire in the Triad Trophy Gala in Cumbria.

In-form Daniel Kings won the butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke, as did Jessica Howarth in the butterfly.

Other good swims came from Amy Jones, Hannah Foster, James Gendall, Alex Foster, Matthew Jackson, Simon Clare and team captain Andrew Grime.
