ST HELENS Town boss Jimmy McBride has swooped to strengthen the Hoghton Road squad.

He's signed three players with experience of higher divisions in the non-league pyramid.

In addition two familiar faces are back in the fold.

And in an eventful week, three players have made their exit from the club.

Newcomers are 'keeper Mike Allison from Unibond League outfit Droylsden, and formerly of Colchester United.

He's joined by midfielder Terry Nestor from Runcorn and formerly Liverpool Reserves and fellow midfielder Ian Street from Curzon Ashton.

But although McBride has opted for experience this time, he's not closed the door on young local talent.

He told me: "We don't want to discourage local lads and if anyone thinks they have the ability they can contact me on 01744 605913."

The squad is further strengthened by the return from a mammoth 93-day suspension of goal-scoring ace Steve Pennington and Alan Hockenhull, who had trials with Exeter City at the beginning of the season before joining Winsford United.

Reflecting on the additions to his squad Jimmy said: "Things are looking better and we should now start to pick up points. It's all down to hard work now."

Meanwhile, heading out of Hoghton Road are Neil Leyland and Neil Byron, who have both joined Ashton Town.

Town have also released Joe Gibiliru, who joined the club as player and assistant coach earlier in the season.

Said Jimmy: "Things didn't work out as we had hoped and we hope Joe all the best for the future."

Meanwhile, Town's home game with Burscough on Saturday was wiped out by the weather.

And this weekend they travel to Clitheroe before entertaining Blackpool Rovers next Wednesday (December 4, 7.30).
