LABOUR councillors who voted to name a town centre street after Nelson Mandela were asked to foot the bill for the ill-fated scheme.

They were asked to hand over £16 each - the rate for attending a four-hour council meeting - to help meet the cost of the court case.

Blackburn Borough councillors were forced to scrap the plan after a successful challenge by angry market traders.
