AN East Lancashire journalist has died after a short illness.

Joan Wright, who wanted her age kept a secret, was living at the Glenroy residential home, Glenshiels Avenue, Hoddlesden, when she died.

Mrs Wright began her newspaper career at the age of 17 as a "ten bob a week" junior reporter on the former Darwen Advertiser newspaper.

She married her late husband, George William Wright, in May 1947 and is survived by a daughter, Pamela.

During her career Mrs Wright also worked at the Clitheroe Advertiser, the Preston-based Farmers Guardian, the Blackburn Times and the Darwen News, which she edited in the early sixties.

Even after retirement she continued to enjoy writing poetry.

Her family have requested donations be sent to the British Heart Foundation, care of Ainsworth Funeral Service, Church Bank Street, Darwen.
