A NEW country park to beautify the surroundings of Accrington has taken a step nearer reality.

Hyndburn's policy and resources committee meeting agreed that council-owned land should be incorporated into the new Woodnook Vale Park.

If funding is made available and plans go ahead the park will stretch from the top of the disused railway corridor in Baxenden to Bullough Park and Woodnook Water in Accrington.

It will encompass attractions including the Haworth Art Gallery and Oak Hill and enable the council to landscape areas now considered an eyesore in the borough. It will also take in parts of Miller Fold and the King George V playing fields.

The council aims to work together with Groundwork East Lancashire to consult local residents and ascertain public opinion.

Coun Sheelagh Delaney said: "I think this is a wonderful idea.

"If this park is created you will be out into the fells straight away.

"There is even the potential to continue the park further and link up with Oswaldtwistle. People may soon be able to follow footpaths and cycle routes right the way through to Knuzden."

Coun Wendy Dwyer said: "I welcome this country park and know the people of Woodnook and Baxenden are excited about it too."

Leader of the Council George Slynn added: "The park will open up access to the area and mean that more people will be able to enjoy some of the beautiful countryside which surrounds us."
