AN IRA Christmas bombing alert was issued in East Lancashire following weekend attacks on two major shopping centres.

Detectives were investigating 13 suspected IRA-style firebomb incidents in Blackpool and Manchester, where police recovered a number of devices at the scenes of four city centre fires.

In response, East Lancashire police issued a 'be vigilant' warning to shoppers and traders.
