AMBULANCE staff in Burnley have been showing a clean pair of heels to their colleagues.

Latest figures show mercy men in the town are responding more quickly to 999 calls than many other districts in the county.

Ambulance crews responded to almost 79 per cent of emergencies in eight minutes or under between October and December last year.

This compared to 76 per cent in Blackburn and an average 77 per cent over the whole of East Lancashire.

Paramedics in Preston managed 74 per cent in under eight minutes while in Blackpool the figure was only 72 per cent.

Crews in West Lancashire and Chorley recorded the lowest figures of less than 60 per cent.

The Burnley crews responded to 3291 calls in the three-month period. In only 50 cases did they take more than 19 minutes to arrive at the scene.

East Lancashire crews responded to 8797 emergency calls.
