EVERY new parent fears the threat of cot death - the syndrome that claims so many precious little.
Two reasons for the incidence of cot death have been given as babies slipping down the bed and pulling the covers over their heads - resulting in overheating.
With this in mind, three enterprising men have designed an invention they hope will cut the number of cot deaths by reducing the space in which things can go wrong.
Nigel Cunnah and Douglas Pickles, who are firemen at St Annes, got together with Andrew Holland from Bolton and came up with what they feel is a potential winner.
"It started as an idea sketched by Andrew," said Nigel. "We all felt it was so good we should try to market it."
Although none of the men have had any personal dealings with cot death, Nigel added:
"It was certainly a fear of mine when my daughter Jessica was very little. If we can help in some way to reduce these terrible incidents then it will be truly rewarding."
The design, called the Sleepsafe Protector, works by reducing the amount of space baby has to move around in - thus preventing covers from smothering the infant.
Nigel believes the invention would sell for approximately £15 - £20.
The three inventors would love to hear from manufacturers willing to take on the product. Contact Nigel on (01253) 828439.
