DETECTIVES are hunting firebugs who deliberately tried to set fire to Blackburn Central Library.
Quick-thinking staff prevented a blaze developing into a major incident - which could have resulted in thousands of pounds worth of damage and serious injury.
The library was evacuated and police and fire officers attended the scene although staff had already put out the blaze, which was started in the reference section.
Norma Monks, divisional librarian said: "This was a premeditated attack. If it wasn't for quick thinking staff I dread to think what could have happened. It was a mindless, stupid act."
Mrs Monks said that incidents of vandalism were few and called on members of the public to be proud of the libraries.
She added: "With more than 3,000 visitors a day and 250,000 lending and reference books, the central library is one of the busiest in the country.
The library dates back to 1851, making it one of the country's oldest libraries - although it has only been at its present Town Hall Street site since 1975.
Sub officer Dave Schofield of Blackburn Fire Brigade confirmed the fire was being treated as arson. He said: "It could have been disastrous had it not been dealt with so swiftly by staff."
