NEW figures have revealed that crime is on the increase at pubs and licensed premises in Blackburn, Darwen and the Ribble Valley.
There were steep increases in the number of arrests for drunkenness and drunkenness with aggravation.
This is a very worrying trend.
During the days of shorter licensing hours it was often said that liberalisation would lead to less drunkenness. It was pointed out that many countries which had virtually 24-hour opening hours did not suffer to the same degree. Our licensing hours have been increased over the last few years. But, sadly, drink-related crime has increased.
Most licensees are responsible people who refuse to serve those who over-indulge. But there are a few who turn a blind eye.
They are the ones who are getting the trade a bad name and causing licensing magistrates to express concern.
Unless there is an improvement, licensing justices will be pressing for a return to more restrictive opening hours.
