A MAJOR £300,000 sporting boost for Golborne has been opened by local MP Ian McCartney.
The opening of Golborne Sports and Social Club's new all- weather, all-sports, pitch and two tennis courts was made possible thanks to a £230,000 National Lottery grant and a cash injection of £60,000 from other sports funding sources.
It is hoped that the new facilities will be actively used by young people in an attempt to keep them off the streets.
The all-weather pitch will be used for football and hockey as well as other sporting fixtures and a big demand is expected.
Alan Hall, treasurer, commented: "We are hiring it out in the evenings and hope we can during the day as well, especially in school holiday periods. We hope these new facilities will make a difference to Golborne."
And local councillor Brian Strett added: "We are convinced it will be a great boost to the town."
