GLAMOROUS grandma Irene Green of Thornton has touched our hearts at the Citizen with her warmth and kindness.

So much so, she was voted the winner of our Mum in a Million competition for her unfaltering love and dedication to grandchildren Leanne, 11, Claire, ten, and Karl, seven.

Young Claire wrote a moving letter to the Citizen to nominate her gran for the Mum in a Million competition, saying: "Nan gave her job up to look after us and we have been with nan and grand

ad for three years and we are going to stay with them for ever.

"Nan takes us to Brownies, Guides, swimming, Boy's Brigade and jazz class. "Please give her nice mother's day because she is the best." The three youngsters moved in with Irene, 55, when Social Services decided it would be best for their welfare.

She decided to leave her job as a cleaner to dedicate more of her time to the family and Irene and her husband Ron have had to make some changes to accommodate them in their lives.

She said: "After our children left home we thought we would have the chance to go away anywhere on holiday at the last minute, but that has changed now.

"When we consider going away now, we always try to find somewhere where the children will have plenty to do.

"We also had an extension built at the back of the house as somewhere for us to relax, but now that has been turned into a toy room!

"We are a very happy family and I am so pleased that the children wrote to the Citizen to nominate me for the competition.

"It was a lovely surprise and it is great to feel appreciated."
