LOCAL Police Specials are going high-tech! A new computer-based training package developed by Greater Manchester Police is being introduced to further develop the quality of training given to Special Constables.

Now basic legal knowledge and policing procedures will be available at the touch of a button.

The £70,000 initiative has benefited from funding from the Home Office and uses a combination of tutorial and simulation material.

This allows recruits to continue their training without the need to attend time consuming courses away from their station.

Chief Inspector Brian Wroe, of GMP's training branch said:

"This is a significant move in our on-going programme of intergrating Special Constables with the regulars.

"There is no doubt that today, regulars are realising that Specials are a well trained force that can be used in a wide range of policing situations.

"In turn, it is clear that the increased level of training has been welcomed by Specials and that, as a result, they now feel a valued part of Greater Manchester Police."

Chief Commandant Bill Turner, responsible for the 700-strong force of Specials said:

"A great deal of effort goes in to the recruiting of each Special Constable.

"Each Special is an extremely valuable resource to us and any move towards giving them more effective training is to be welcomed.

"From those Specials I have spoken to, it is clear that this new package is a welcome addition to the training process, allowing each individual to develop their own skills even further."
