'ADULT' shows and alcohol will not be getting any more encores at the Theatre Royal.

But members of the St Helens Theatre Royal Trust have moved to dispel fears that the imminent takeover of the tenancy by Independent Methodists will result in the theatre becoming a religious institution.

The trust have confirmed that, following the departure of current tenants, Stanley and June Sher at the end of April, the agreement will be taken over by I. M. Connections, established by members of the Independent Methodist Church in West Street, Thatto Heath.

Trust member Ray Dobbs told the Star: "We were given 12 months notice of the Shers' intentions to leave and have interviewed a number of applicants since then. In the end, it was felt that I. M. Connections would suit the Theatre Royal best.

"Of course, this doesn't mean that the theatre is going to be turned into a venue for religious services in any way, shape or form."

Trevor Prescott, the administrative secretary for I. M. Connections, added: "Our entertainment policy for the theatre will will be almost the same as the current one, with only two differences. There will be no adult-only entertainment shows and the theatre bar will no longer serve alcohol. We want to show good-quality, family entertainment at the theatre, with the ultimate aim of attracting more people."

I.M.Connections are holding a meeting at the church on Tuesday, March 18 at which members of the public can learn more about their plans for the theatre.
