BRENTFORD away promises to be Burnley's toughest game of the season.

But all is not well with the division-two leaders. Manager David Webb has tendered his resignation despite the fact that his team has lost just five games this season and look to be heading for an automatic promotion place, if not the title.

Webb's future will be decided when Brentford's chairman returns from a trip abroad and in the meantime he is still in charge.

His unlikely move followed Brentford's defeat at Preston on Saturday, which ended with the away fans booing their team off the pitch.

None of this is likely to make the Clarets' task any easier - but if the home fans turn against their team on Saturday (March 15), they won't make Brentford's task any easier either.

The last-minute transfer rush is yet to take off, and while Chris Brass has pledged his future to Burnley by signing a two-year contract this week, Paul Smith is still the target of at least one premiership club.

An offer thought to be worth £500,000 is on the table, but Adrian Heath would hope for more than that for his young star. Meanwhile the boss is looking at Raith Rovers' Scotland U21 defender Paul Browne - £200,000 is the asking price.

Preston North End's £200,000 offer for Kurt Nogan was turned down.

Heath expects the dealing to start soon - and once it starts it could escalate as teams find they have money available and the options to be able to release players.

Peter Swan has recovered from his hamstring injury and could be back in the team to face Brentford
