A SAFE parking scheme is being launched to beat night-time vandals who have been targeting the area around Darwen Library Theatre.

The move comes as a direct result of an attack earlier this year during which windows at the theatre were smashed and cars belonging to the Library Players and Youth Theatre, wrecked.

Council chiefs, police and local community leaders came up with the idea at to combat the problem.

Theatre users and other night-time visitors to Darwen Library will be given access to the secure market car park, which will be locked and patrolled during the course of any event.

Ward councillor Dave Smith, who is also chair of the council's community and leisure services committee, said: "We have been concerned by recent incidents of vandalism and the deterrent effect it might have on people visiting Darwen during the evening. "We believe the offer of free use of the secure market car park will be widely welcomed and give visitors peace of mind."

Patrolling and lock-up arrangements for the car park will be the responsibility of the the library event organisers.

Jenny Billingsley, of Darwen Library Players, added: "We are delighted. We are also sure it has had an adverse affect on the number of people coming to see our productions."
