IWAS very interested to read the information from June Huntingdon (Letters, March 26) about Mr Thomas Hewitt who came round the streets of Oswaldtwistle with his rag and bone cart. He was a lovely man, always smiling and when we children gave him rags etc., he gave us a few sweets and asked you what colour of scrubbing stone our mothers wanted - white, yellow or cream.
Another well-known character was Mr Hodson. I think he had a hand cart and was always so nice.
His granddaughter, Mrs Bernadette Flanagan, mentions him in Benita Moore's book 'Gobbin Tales.'
