A REFURBISHMENT plan for Prestwich's Longfield Precinct could see cash in the region of £1.5 million and £2 million being spent.
It is understood that discussions between Bury Council's planning department and owners of the precinct, Bourne End Developments, are about to be enter in to a period of public consultation.
The plans being discussed include:
More of shops, possibly built on what is now known as the Village Green in front of the Prestwich Library.
Larger units, in at least one case making two shops into one, to attract new businesses such as another supermarket chain.
New entrances at both the front, Bury New Road, and the rear, facing the Metrolink Station.
Increased and better car parking and management to attract shoppers and deter all day parking.
New security arrangements.
Refurbishment of the precinct and surrounding areas.
Increased library facilities - but relocating it on the first floor.
It is also understood that the owners have agreed to a rent freeze for existing tenants.
Former owners, Capitol Landholdings Ltd had two plans for refurbishment approved by the council but said, eventually, that they had not got the funds.
The scheme has gained the support of traders representatives in Prestwich who have agreed to lobby the council and public to accept it.
