NATURE lovers fear a planned housing development in Rossendale could threaten bird life in a local beauty spot.
Rossendale Ornithologists Club has warned councillors that plans for four terrace houses in Musbury Valley, Helmshore, could threaten grey wagtails and dippers which are often seen in the area.
The plans are also strongly opposed by local residents, neighbours and the Civic Trust.
A decision on whether to approve the development off Park Road, Helmshore, will be made by planning councillors tomorrow.
Planners are recommending approval because the land falls within the council's urban boundary and was once earmarked for extra car parking for Airtours offices.
They acknowledge that the site is "undeniably rural in character" but point out that the planned car park would have covered a much bigger area than the terrace of houses will. The plans are strongly opposed by Haslingden and District Civic Trust who believe it would set a precedent for building in the area.
Trust members also say Carr Lane is a simple dirt track which could not carry the number of cars which would follow housing development.
Helmshore Residents Association claims the development would encroach on open countryside which it says is "a popular, unspoilt tourist area".
The council has received eight letters of objection from neighbours concerned about loss of attractive countryside, impact on wildlife, poor access and poor design.
The plan is for a staggered terrace of four stone-built cottages on a flat site between Carr Lane and Musbury Brook at the foot of the Musbury Valley.
