Political Background: Member of the Conservative party but left in 1980. Joined the SDP in 1981 and stood in the General Election in 1983 and 1987 in the Ribble Valley for the Alliance. Won 1991 by-election and became the Ribble Valley's first Liberal Democrat MP before losing the seat the following year.
