WHEN it comes to getting results in life there are few to beat the determination of Atherton teenager Suzanne Brown.

For Suzanne, 18, an ex-pupil of Hesketh Fletcher High School and Winstanley College, has already made her mark by gaining the prestigious Jim Hammond Memorial Prize which was handed to her by the Mayor on Monday.

It is in recognition of her achieving the highest 'A' level results in the area for those having mining connections, a stipulation of the Hammond Trophy.

And with a string of 'A' levels to her credit and her great-grandparents being one-time pit workers in Leigh, Suzanne, who is now studying Law at Cambridge University, is well qualified for the prize.

From her parents home in Douglas Road, Atherton, Suzanne said: "I am delighted to have won and I know my parents are pleased, and I think my great-grandparents, being an ordinary mining family, would have also been proud."

Suzanne has a brother Gareth, 15, a pupil at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley. Next news story
