DINO Christodoulou (Letters, April 14) says Jack Walker will get more joy and hope if he gives money to the poor, destitute, orphanages, schools and hospitals of the Ukraine.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, there are some 16 billionaires in Britain who are more wealthy and more powerful than Jack Walker.

Among them are some prominent household names - David Sainsbury, the Duke of Westminster, J and S Bamford, Sir James Goldsmith and Richard Branson.

According to the Rich List, Mr Walker is the twenty-fourth richest man in Britain with £550 million. He has invested £60 million in his beloved Blackburn Rovers. I am sure, Mr Christodoulou, that he gets more joy out of his Rovers. He has done for Blackburn far more than any other citizen by investing part of his fortune in a small mediocre football club.

He should be rewarded for this by being given the Freedom of the Borough or a knighthood by the Queen?

The people of this country have done their bit to help Third World countries by donating money, clothing, foods etc to charities concerned with famine in Africa, the poverty-stricken countries of the Eastern Bloc and the Indian sub-continent.

British people have always been generous in helping the unfortunate countries.

Remember, Mr Christodoulou, charity also begins at home. Don't forget the homeless, the needy pensioners and poor families in Britain who can't even afford to buy toys for their children at Christmas.
